How Millennials will shape your Corporate Communications

Millennials are those born roughly between 1980 and 2000, but more importantly they’re the generation who have grown up experiencing rapid change and the development of the ‘Digital Revolution’.

They have gone from playing in the streets to following friends on social media. From dial-up Internet to instant access everywhere and from storing information on Floppy disc to accessing the cloud.

Why does that concern me?

Millennials now outnumber the Baby Boomer generation and as they reach retirement age, Millennials are going to make up 50% of the workforce by 2020. Therefore if you don’t want to miss out on a large proportion (roughly 25% of the UK) of potential shareholders, investors and employees, you’re going to need to learn how to engage and understand this audience.

What do Millennials want?

Need for ease and Instant access to information. So that PDF on your website may need some thought. It’s quick to download, however it’s not always quick to navigate and not easy to view on mobile.

Meaningful work or belonging. Your company’s culture and brand values will be of more significance to this group. Clear company values will create a stronger connection attracting millennials who will fit and want be part of something.

To give back/effect the greater good. Passionate on topics such as closing the Gender Wage Gap and Environmental impact. This will require considerate thought around content for Governance and Corporate Responsibility Reporting.
