In an increasingly digital world, investors and companies need to come together to discuss how to get corporate reporting online and in a format that benefits all.

With this in mind, the FRC’s Financial Reporting Lab started the “Corporate Reporting in a digital world” project in April 2014 to look at the current situation, challenges and barriers that may occur and how to make the most out of digital opportunities in the future.

The main aim of the project is to see how companies currently use digital communications and what they can be used for in the future. Since the start of the project, the group have looked at what the current level of digital reporting is and have come up with some initial suggestions such as:

  • Looking at the formatting of PDF’s of Annual Reports - making them easier to use, not just designed with paper in mind.
  • Having the ability to print out simpler versions of reports rather than the full colour and image heavy PDFs.
  • Attaching transcripts for webcasts and videos.
  • Making spreadsheets user friendly by removing the majority of formatting.

With the full report expected towards the end of the year, it will likely be a step forward in creating a greater collaboration between companies and investors, resulting in a better user experience.
